Civic Square is an open public area at the centre of Wellington. It marks the boundary between the financial district (north) and the entertainment district (south). A 3.4 metre diameter sphere of sculpted leaves is suspended 14 metres over its centre. The square is surrounded by council buildings each with a distinctive architectural style It is used for public events and is a popular place for office workers to eat lunch. The wide City-to-Sea pedestrian bridge acts as a gateway from Civic Square to Wellington's waterfront. Wellington supports an arts scene, café culture and nightlife much larger than many cities of similar size. It is an important centre of New Zealand's film and theatre industry. The TSB Bank Arena is used as an indoor-sports arena, rock concert venue, and public trade-show facility. Completed in 1876, the "Old Government Buildings" now house the Victoria University of Wellington's Law School. The city has more cafes per capita than New York City. Wellington has become home to myriad high-profile events and cultural celebrations. The city is New Zealand's political centre, this government buiding being known as the "Beehive". Wellington houses Parliament, and the head offices of all Government Ministries and Departments. The railway station is in the background. The area has high seismic activity even by New Zealand standards, with a major fault line in the city. Wellington suffered serious damage in a series of earthquakes in 1848 in 1855. Wellington is the seat of New Zealand's highest court, the Supreme Court of New Zealand. Wellington is the southernmost national capital city in the world, with a latitude about 41ES.
