The city is built on hills surrounding Port Jackson. Port Jackson is more commonly known as Sydney Harbour. The iconic Sydney Opera House is a prominent feature. The Sydney Opera House was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007. It is one of the 20th century's most distinctive buildings and most famous performing arts centres. The Opera House is situated on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The harbour is used as the starting point of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. It is also used as the location of the New Year's Eve Fireworks. The first recorded European discovery of Sydney Harbour was by Lt James Cook in 1770. Lt James Cook named the inlet after Sir George Jackson, a Lord Commissioner of the British Admiralty. Eighteen years later Governor Arthur Phillip took a longboat and two cutters to examine Port Jackson. Governor Arthur Phillip established the first colony in Australia, later to become the city of Sydney. Phillip wrote that "...we had the satisfaction of finding the finest harbour in the world..." The harbour has continued to play a key role in the history and development of Sydney. Today Sydney is a centre for commerce, arts, fashion, entertainment, music, education and tourism.
