Rahis Ahmed

Career Notes:

The internationally known tabla maestro and vocalist, Rahis Khan, made his debut in the world of music with a concert performance at the ripe old age of seven.  He was already a two-year veteran, having started singing, playing various instruments and performing with his family, at the age of five. His father, Ustad Aziz Khan, who was a prominent musician with All India Radio from 1976 until 1996, taught Rahis, along with his three brothers, from the time they were very young.  Rahis began with a singing career, and, at age fourteen, he developed an equal passion for the Indian percussion instrument, the tabla.  He has been performing both as a vocalist and a tabla maestro, virtually his whole life.

Rahis has performed all over the world, from Saudi Arabia to Singapore, in his homeland, India, and in the United States.  He has played in many diverse styles and with such varied groups and individuals as George Harrison and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.  He has performed with ghazal geniuses like Ghulam Ali and Anup Jalota participated in films, like Leela, and appeared on the Jay Leno show.  Rahis Khan works to maintain his musical heritage by teaching private classes in San Diego, California and on the faculty of the Encinitas School of Music in Encinitas, California.

Most recently, Rahis Khan has completed a singing tour of California, performing traditional and classical India vocals in ghazal, geet and show tunes.  During this tour, he performed to audiences in San Diego, Orange County and the Bay area.  In the past year, Rahis Khan has recorded a soon to be released CD, with his three brothers and brother-in-law , all highly accomplished musicians themselves, and Anup Jalota, in Mumbai, India.  He has played tabla with such legendary musicians as Anup Jalota (San Diego) and Ghulam Ali (Bay area).  He has performed in many, many private concerts, and in conjunction with San Diego’s non-profit organization Raag and Taal.
