The Story Behind The Lyrics

War is hell for those involved. It should never be initiated unless all peaceful means to resolve an issue have been exhausted. It is sung from the perspective of a female combatant who has returned from the war with her body intact, but whose heart and soul will never be the same after witnessing the brutality of war.

Text Version Of Lyrics

Give Me Back My Heart

You, made us feel so proud, your words were spoken loud
We’d get revenge for the attack
You, took advantage of our fears, the hero amidst the cheers
Then you took us to hell and back

I’ve got nothing left to give you that you need or haven’t already got
Oh but there’s one exception I forgot

Give me back my heart, boy (George)
I saw too much, It’s broken like some old, toy
And I will never be the same
And I’m crying, for those souls my eyes had seen that lay dying
So give me back my heart

You, you took us to the brink, because you seemed to think
That oil’s worth much more than life
We, shoved and pushed our weight, but all it’s brought is hate
And now we have to pay the price

I’ll never be the same as I carry all the shame, but you’ll never see
I know it’s time for healing, but I can’t find that feeling
Things just ain’t the same
